 At WasteCo, we deliver essential services that support communities, councils, and critical industries across New Zealand. Behind this work is a large, operational, safety critical workforce and we’re now looking for an experienced HR Business Partner to support our Northern operations.

This is a senior, hands‑on HR role for someone who enjoys being close to the business, partnering with leaders, and navigating complex people challenges in a fast‑paced, operational environment.

About the Role

Reporting to the Group HR Manager, you’ll act as a trusted advisor to leaders, proactively addressing both strategic and day‑to‑day people matters. You’ll balance strategic input with practical delivery, supporting leaders across a multi‑site operation.Key aspects of the role include:

  • Providing clear, pragmatic people advice to operational leaders
  • Leading complex employment relations matters end‑to‑end
  • Leading organisational change, consultation, and workforce planning
  • Coaching leaders to build confidence and capability in people leadership

What You’ll Be Involved In

You’ll work closely with leaders and the wider HR team to:

  • Manage investigations, performance management, restructures, and personal grievances
  • Support union engagement and industrial risk management
  • Align HR and Health & Safety practices, including injury management, ACC claims, and return‑to‑work plans
  • Lead and support the rollout and embedding of national leadership development programmes
  • Contribute to national HR projects and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Use HR data and insights to identify trends, risks, and improvement opportunities

What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for a credible, resilient HR professional who is comfortable operating in complex, operational environments and enjoys partnering closely with leaders. You’ll bring:

  • 7+ years’ experience in a senior HR generalist or HR Business Partner role
  • Proven experience managing complex employment relations matters end‑to‑end
  • Strong working knowledge of New Zealand employment legislation
  • Experience supporting organisational change and consultation processes
  • Confidence working in operational, industrial, multi‑site or unionised environments
  • Strong communication skills, sound judgement, and a practical, solutions‑focused approach
